BISMARCK, N.D., August 31, 2026 – The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) is launching a new effort in which State Superintendent Levi Bachmeier, along with department staff, will volunteer as substitute teachers during the 2026–27 school year.
“Every parent and teacher knows to best serve students, understanding the realities of today’s classroom is essential,” State Superintendent Levi Bachmeier said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to connect directly with kids and remain grounded in the everyday experiences of our students and teachers.”
Bachmeier also hopes the effort will highlight the critical shortage of substitute teachers across the state, which often forces teachers to cover multiple classrooms simultaneously and requires building leaders to juggle classroom coverage instead of advancing instructional practices. Those interested in supporting their local school by substitute teaching can find more information at the Education Standards and Practices Board website.
Superintendent Bachmeier maintains an active North Dakota teaching license and will substitute teach for three full days. NDDPI staff members who hold a current teaching license may volunteer for a day as well.
To participate, district superintendents were asked to commit themselves to substitute teach at least one full day during the school year. Participating schools will be selected at random. NDDPI extends its appreciation to educators for their continued dedication and service to students and communities despite the workforce challenges facing schools across North Dakota.
