The North Dakota Content Standards are reviewed every five to seven years. The review process begins with the selection of the standards for review. The review is conducted by a team of North Dakota educators who review the standards within the discipline, considering advances within that disciplinary area, national standards, and standards from states like North Dakota. The drafts of the revised standards are published and open to public comment, which the reviewers use to make further revisions. The drafts are also reviewed by a team of reviewers consisting of North Dakota stakeholders, including parents, businesspersons, and other members of the North Dakota community.

The process used for standards review is shown in the following chart:

Public Comment Survey Open: Draft 1 North Dakota Social Studies Content Standards

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) invites public feedback on the initial draft of the North Dakota Social Studies Content Standards. The public comment period will close on June 30, 2026.

These standards outline the essential knowledge, and skills students are expected to develop at each stage of their education. They are intended to guide students learning outcomes, while allowing flexibility in instructional methods, curriculum design, and assessment practices.

Over the past two months, a committee of North Dakota educators has developed a first draft as a starting point in the standards revision process. The committee is actively seeking input to help refine and strengthen the standards as their work continues.

NDDPI encourages all interested stakeholders–including educators, parents, community members, and industry representatives–to review the draft and share feedback through the survey link below. Your input will play an important role in shaping the next iteration of these standards.

For more information about the standards review process, contact Davonne Eldredge, Assistant Director, Office of Academic Support, at deldredge@nd.gov.
