BISMARCK, N.D., Aug. 27, 2026 – The Sweet Briar 17 School District welcomed several distinguished leaders today, including U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, Kirsten Baesler, assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education at the U.S. Department of Education, North Dakota U.S. Rep. Julie Fedorchak and North Dakota State Superintendent Levi Bachmeier. The visit highlighted the district’s ongoing work to support students, strengthen instructional programs and expand opportunities for families across the community.
During the visit, district staff showcased initiatives aimed at improving academic outcomes, integrating innovative classroom technologies and supporting teacher development. Guests toured classrooms and spoke with students about their experiences in the district.
During the visit, Superintendent Bachmeier underscored the importance of hearing directly from North Dakota schools. “The mission of education begins and ends with student success and well-being,” Bachmeier said. “Our visit to Sweet Briar offered a powerful opportunity for federal officials to see firsthand how a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work and will hold states like North Dakota back. We’re grateful to Sweet Briar students, staff and leadership for its hospitality and dedicated efforts to help North Dakota lead the nation with America’s best schools.”
The visit also emphasized collaboration between state and federal agencies and local school leaders to ensure teachers and families lead in identifying what students need to thrive.
