Steps to Speech Language Pathology License

A Speech Language Pathologist license in ND requires a master’s degree in speech language pathology/communication disorders. Speech Language Pathologists apply online using the ND Teach system, just as teachers do. Here are the options for licensure:

Option 1: Initial Two-Year In-State Educators License

Applicant completed a master’s degree in speech language pathology from a ND college.

+ Applicant applies online and submits a background check packet. Official transcripts and Speech Language Pathology Praxis test scores will be needed to complete the application. If you already have a ND educators license, a background check is not needed.

Option 2: Initial Out of State Reciprocal License

Applicant completed a master’s degree in speech language pathology from outside of ND and does not hold a speech language pathology license in another state.

+ Applicant applies online and submits a background check packet. Official transcripts and Speech Language Pathology Praxis test scores will be needed to complete the application. Then, a transcript analysis is done by ESPB to determine if any education courses and/or tests are needed to meet licensure standards.

Option 3: Initial Other State Educator License (OSEL)

Applicant completed a master’s degree in speech language pathology from outside of ND and holds a current, valid speech language pathology license in another state.

+ Applicant applies online and submits a background check packet. Official transcripts and Speech Language Pathology Praxis test scores (if completed) will be needed to complete the application. Applicant must also submit a copy of their valid license in speech language pathology in another state, and standardized test score report used by that state/college or evidence of licensure held prior to 2002. If applicant doesn’t have either of these, a plan will be issued and the applicant would have two years to complete ND required test.
