North Dakota’s economy is changing, and, now more than ever, a skilled workforce is vital to the success of any company — big or small. In industries like energy, agriculture, healthcare, unmanned aerial systems, biotech, cybersecurity, manufacturing and engineering, we’re seeing the emergence of new solutions built on innovative ideas. 

All this change and innovation means we need to ensure we are preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s workers. That requires a new perspective and supporting efforts including:

  • Giving local control to schools to help their students succeed through innovative education practices and SB2186
  • Providing high quality educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields
  • Allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school
  • Providing project-based learning and public-private partnerships
  • Developing lifetime learning and workforce training and enhancement

From programs like Operation Intern and apprenticeships to high quality, integrated curriculum in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), North Dakota is committed to preparing our future workforce for our state’s long-term employment opportunities.

SUCCESS STORIES

These North Dakota towns are great examples of how retooling workforce development and educational programs can help keep their local economy strong.

HAZEN

The Dakota Nursing Program educates more than 200 future practical nurses and associate degree nurses (two-year registered nurses) each year through four colleges in communities across North Dakota. This program brings the campus directly to communities such as Hazen.

BEULAH, CENTER-STANTON, HAZEN, UNDERWOOD AND WASHBURN

Coal Country Leadership Academy (CCLA) program encourages students to observe and interact with employees from the coal industry to learn about careers and leadership. Approximately 50 to 75 students take part in this program each year. Students from Beulah, Center-Stanton, Hazen, Underwood and Washburn form the CCLA.
