- Bachelor’s degree; or
- Associate degree combined with two years of work experience dealing with the public or military service.
- We will accept 60 semester hours in place of an associate degree.
- Education must be from a college or university regionally accredited by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Post-secondary Education. Verify accreditation here or contact your school's registrar's office.
- Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Vision correctable to 20/30 or better each eye, normal color vision (to sufficiently distinguish red, yellow and green) and normal depth perception.
- Must possess an unrestricted driver’s license except for corrective lenses. Must also demonstrate an appropriate driving record. Revoked or suspended driving privileges within the last 3 years ordinarily disqualifies an applicant.
- Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position.
- Must be willing to perform work involving personal hazards, requiring irregular hours including night shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Must successfully pass written tests designed to determine suitability for the position of a trooper. These tests measure the primary skills critical to successfully learn and perform the duties of a trooper.
- Must demonstrate an appropriate background that would not call into question the ability to fulfill the functions of a law enforcement officer. Felony convictions and domestic violence convictions will disqualify an applicant. In addition, any Class A misdemeanor conviction within the last 5 years, or any Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last 3 years ordinarily will disqualify an applicant from further consideration.
- Must not have been convicted of a criminal offense that would harm the integrity of the Patrol.
- Must demonstrate judgment and common sense. Be willing to discipline yourself to meet the job demands.
- Willing to accept assignment anywhere in the state.
