The North Dakota Peace Officers Association has awarded the 2018 Peace Officer of the Year award to North Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Kyle Stern at its recent annual meeting in Minot.

The Peace Officer of the Year award is presented to a North Dakota peace officer based upon the officer’s outstanding service, professional dignity, and unselfish personal contributions to the citizens of North Dakota and serves as recognition of an officer who consistently displays excellence within their profession.

Trooper Stern has served with the North Dakota Highway Patrol since 2002 and is currently stationed in Hillsboro. During his 15 years with the NDHP, Trooper Stern has shown dedication to the mission of providing public safety on the state’s highways. In addition to actively enforcing traffic and criminal laws, investigating crashes and performing motorist assists, Stern serves as the coordinator of the NDHP Canine Program and currently works with narcotic detection K9 Draco.

Trooper Stern was selected to receive the Peace Officer of the Year award based on his exemplary service and dedication.  In his nomination letter, NDHP Sgt. Ryan Panasuk noted, “Trooper Stern’s professionalism, extensive knowledge, and servant attitude in representing not only the NDHP, but law enforcement in general, is a tribute to his dedication to law enforcement and the people of this state.”

Trooper Stern was chosen as the North Dakota Highway Patrol 2010 Trooper of the Year by the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association and was nominated for 2016 Trooper of the Year. In 2011, the Safe Communities Coalition of the Red River Valley recognized Trooper Stern’s efforts in enforcing child passenger safety laws and in 2013 recognized his enforcement of underage drinking laws.
