At approximately 0533 pm on December 2, 2017, a 1974 Cessna Cardinal airplane was flying from Fargo to Bismarck. Due to total engine failure, pilot Jerry Schauer of Bismarck had to land the airplane. The pilot was able to safely glide the plane onto I 94 around mm 280 westbound and then taxi into the north ditch. The landing occurred 12 miles west of Valley City in Barnes County.

 

North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to the scene. There was no other damage to the airplane and the pilot was not hurt. The plane will remain in the north ditch overnight and will be retrieved tomorrow during daylight hours.

 

The FAA are aware of the incident and representatives will coordinate response with the pilot.

 

There will be no investigation conducted by the NDHP.
