This program is a Chautauqua performance that will bring historical figures to life. South Dakota scholar Joyce Jefferson will portray Sarah Campbell, an early Bismarck entrepreneur who accompanied Custer on his Black Hills expedition and became a founding member of the Custer Mining Company. Marvin Jefferson will portray York, Captain William Clark’s enslaved servant and valued member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition whose unique experience on the western frontier can help us understand the place of African Americans in the West before the end of slavery. This event is made possible by an ND250 Community Initiatives grant, in partnership with Bringing Humanities to Life at BSC and The Study.

The event is free, but registration will be required.
