ND250 events underway as nation commemorates 250th anniversary

North Dakota is helping preserve America’s story for future generations through participation in America’s Time Capsule, a national initiative tied to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

As part of the nationwide America250 commemoration, states across the country were invited to contribute items representing their history, culture, and identity during the semiquincentennial celebration. North Dakota’s contributions highlight the state’s leadership, heritage, and enduring connection to the American story.

Items submitted on behalf of North Dakota include a commemorative coin marking the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, a summary of the 2026 State of the State address documenting the condition and priorities of North Dakota during the semiquincentennial, and archival photographs reflecting the state’s people, communities, industries, landscapes, and culture in 2026.

“America’s Time Capsule project is an opportunity for North Dakota to leave a meaningful imprint on the national story,” said Bill Peterson, director of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and chair of the ND250 Commission. “These items help tell the story of who we are today while preserving a snapshot of our state for future generations.”

North Dakota’s participation in America’s Time Capsule is one part of a broader statewide effort to commemorate America250 and reflect on the nation’s founding, civic ideals, and shared history.

Throughout the summer and fall, more than 100 ND250-related events are already planned across North Dakota, with additional events continuing to be added. Communities, museums, libraries, schools, historical organizations, civic groups, and local governments are participating in once-in-a-generation programming designed to connect North Dakotans to the American story and North Dakota’s role within it.

Upcoming highlights include the opening of the ND250 exhibit at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in July, as well as the Founders Museum interactive display currently on exhibit at the North Dakota State Capitol. The Founders Museum installation features visual storytelling and educational experiences focused on key moments and figures from America’s founding era.

North Dakotans are encouraged to attend events, participate in local commemorations, explore historical exhibits, and engage in conversations about the past, present, and future of the nation as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.

A full calendar of ND250 events, educational resources, and opportunities to get involved can be found at nd250.com.

“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our nation’s history while reflecting on the people, places, and values that continue to shape North Dakota and America,” Peterson said.
