Career Description




As an Equipment Operator, you will perform highway, roadway, and structure maintenance. This includes operating heavy equipment to perform required maintenance duties like basic snow and ice control/removal. You will complete highway maintenance duties, which include assisting in installing, repairing, and maintaining highway signs and guardrails. To complete these tasks and others assigned, you will operate power tools and other equipment to perform maintenance duties. Part of this job is to keep the roadways clear of any hazards, including litter, waste, debris, garbage, and carcasses.You will complete building and ground maintenance duties and general routine roadway and radio system equipment maintenance. You will also perform minor preventive and repair maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Maintain necessary paperwork, including time records, activity reporting, daily diary, road reports, etc. You will receive training and perform construction project duties under close supervision.An essential part of this position and the culture at the NDDOT is to maintain a safe working environment for yourself, your coworkers, and others.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid North Dakota Class A drivers license with air brakes with a cargo tanker endorsement by the first day of work.Two years of relevant experience.Requires reporting to work within 30 minutes, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays during emergency events. * If unable to find a candidate with preferred experience, will consider filling this position as an Equipment Operator I or an Equipment Operator in Training:To be considered for an equipment operator I, you must have a valid North Dakota Class B drivers license. Requires reporting to work within 30 minutes, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays during emergency events.To be considered for an Equipment Operator in Training, you must have a valid North Dakota Class A drivers permit with air brakes and a cargo tanker endorsement by the first day of work. The employee will have 12 months to obtain a North Dakota Class A drivers license with air brakes and cargo-tanker endorsement. Requires reporting to work within 30 minutes, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays during emergency events. Employment of the selected candidate will be contingent on satisfactorily completing the interview process and the required drug test, medical screening, reference check, and driving records check.

As a Fleet & Equipment Technician III, you will repair vehicles and equipment to keep vehicles and equipment ready for use, you will diagnosis and repair all fleet trucks and DOT equipment. Install different components to DOT equipment and vehicles including radios, safety lighting, light bars, sirens, etc. Your duties will include: Automobile Repair - Troubleshoot and repair systems on cars and pickups; computerized automotive systems with use of complex computer diagnosis system, electrical, transmission, differentials, drivelines, clutches, heating and air conditioning, carburetors and fuel injection systems, brakes and antilock systems, tires, windshields and computerized air bag system and body computers. Radio Installation and Accessories - Installation of 2-way radios, wire and design wiring schematics for electrical accessories, roof antennas, safety equipment, prisoner cages, red lights on law enforcement vehicles. Install emblems, decals, and stripes, cut out switches for Game and Fish enforcement vehicles and mobile vision camera and work with mobile data computers. Light and Heavy Truck Repair - Troubleshoot and repair single and tandem axle trucks; brakes, hydraulics, clutches, drivelines, electrical, gas and diesel engines, tune-ups, transmission repairs, windshields, electronic shift automatic transmission, electronic instrument cluster, computerized diesel engines with use of lap top computer to diagnose, electronic or hydraulic systems, and antilock brake systems. Heavy Equipment, Tractors & Minor Equipment Repair - testing, replacing, or rebuilding as needed; Troubleshoot and repair; cooling, electrical, steering systems, brakes, gear boxes, clutches, hydraulics, transmissions, engine repair gas and diesel, differentials, hydrostatic drive transmission, antilock and air brake trailers, and electronic instrument cluster. Shop Maintenance and Recordkeeping - maintain tools and shop area, fill out time sheets accurately, use Fleet Focus system, check and report accident hazards.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position as a Fleet and Equipment III, you must have a Class A Driver License, completed a two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology, and 2 years of work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity as those listed in the .Completion of a three-year master technology program and one year of work experience performing duties listed in the can substitute for the 2-year curriculum and 2 years of experience.Work experience performing duties similar in type and complexity to those to be performed on vehicles and equipment like those to be serviced may be substituted for the educational requirement of the basis of one year of work experience for one year of education. Successful applicant must provide required tools on the date of hire. List of required tools is available from any district office.As determined by the district engineer or division director, employees will at times be required to report to work within 30 minutes in situations involving emergency, storm, or public safety concerns. The North Dakota Public Service Commission seeks to hire a highly skilled individual to perform constructed-related work inspecting, documenting, and overseeing onsite construction operations at AML project sites as a field project manager. This position will also assist in planning, surveying, and designing projects for the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Division. The AML Division enhances the public's safety by prioritizing and reclaiming abandoned coal mine sites that pose health, safety, and general welfare hazards. A team of scientists and engineers on staff collectively plan, design, develop, and execute AML projects. We are looking for an energetic, detail-oriented person with a background in construction, engineering, environmental science or land reclamation experience to join the team.The successful candidate will work in an office and at abandoned mine project sites. Travel with overnight stays during the construction season is expected. Work weeks will vary but are expected to be approximately 50 hours per week during the construction season and approximately 30 hours per week during the off-season. Project work may be conducted in all types of weather and requires walking and driving on rough, uneven, and slippery ground and around heavy equipment. Some manual labor is required such as digging with a shovel, pounding in stakes and fence posts and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires an associate degree in environmental, agricultural, natural, or physical science; construction management; engineering; or a related field and three years of professional-level work experience.A bachelor's degree in the above fields may substitute for two years of professional-level work experience. OR Five years of professional-level work experience in a closely related field and an associate degree in another field.Must have, or obtain within 30 days of employment, a valid North Dakota driver's license. If unable to find applicants with satisfactory experience listed above, we will consider filling this position at a lower experience level which requires an associate's degree in the fields indicated above and at least one year of work-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Project management experience that includes heavy construction and drilling equipment. Experience managing contracts and contractors. Experience with a variety of technology including ArcGIS, AutoCAD, databases, and computer-based data analyses. Experience applying environmental laws, rules, and policies. Experience preparing environmental assessments, reports, and related documents. Experience working with federal or state oversight agencies. Management of environmental projects.
