Contact information: Brianna Ludwig, North Dakota State Auditor’s Office, 701-328-2453, bsludwig@nd.gov

State Auditor Joshua Gallion today released an audit of the Belcourt Public Schools highlighting several opportunities for improvement that will require management to act for the betterment of the school district and those it serves. Some of the areas that need improvement include possible conflicts of interest relating to board members, the school district’s responsibility for reporting gate fees, and monetary awards of $34,750 to students for attendance.

"Citizens initiated this audit to get thorough and independent answers on the school district’s spending practices," Auditor Gallion said. "What we found were deficiencies in their controls and a need for greater internal accountability within the District and to those they serve."

The full report details other improvement opportunities that Belcourt Public School District will be able to address within their authority. Our audit provides recommendations to improve accountability to the district’s staff, students, and taxpayers of the Belcourt School District.

“We want to thank the District staff for their cooperation and dedication to making improvements to better their school,” Gallion said. “The petition process gives citizens the opportunity to be engaged in holding government accountable at any level.” This audit was initiated through the citizen petition process; the petition requesting the audit required 195 valid signatures from District residents.
