Bismarck, N.D. – The North Dakota Highway Patrol launched a new automated routing and permit system on June 12. This $2.5 million state-of-the-art online system automatically calculates overweight and oversized vehicle routes and permit fees. This system is a collaboration between the NDHP, North Dakota Department of Transportation and North Dakota Information Technology Department that took two years to complete.
At the NDHP website, drivers enter vehicle, load and trip information. Permit fees and driving routes are automatically calculated, saving valuable time for the motor carrier industry and providing safe routes. Roadway restrictions are calculated in real-time. After completing the online form, permit and route information is generated within minutes. Turn-by-turn directions and route changes are provided electronically to drivers. Companies can purchase permits entirely online without lengthy phone waits. The system can be navigated from a computer, smartphone or tablet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Electronic permits carried in the vehicle will be accepted starting August 1. Paper copies of permits will still be accepted.
Last year, the NDHP issued more than 348,000 permits, a 32 percent increase since 2011. “We are excited to offer this enhanced permitting and routing process for the motor carrier industry,” said Col. Prochniak. “The user-friendly system will save valuable time and increase route safety.”
