What are residency requirements?

A. The requirement for residency is to have resided in the state of North Dakota for one year preceding application or North Dakota received credit for veteran service.

What is the cost to live at the North Dakota Veterans Home?

A. Basic Care Rent is calculated as 25% of a resident's first $1200 of annual rent eligible income and 50% of additional rent eligible income. Annual rent will be divided by 12 to determine monthly rent. The maximum amount of rent charges for January to December 2004 will be $6600, which prorates to $550 per month. Additional rent charges will be billed for residents that have requested a private room. Charges for a single private room will be $1.00 per day and $1.50 per day for a double private room.

Skilled Care Rent calculations are not applicable to Skilled Care Residents as they are charged a daily rate as developed by the State of North Dakota Human Services Case Mix System. The case mix amount is reduced by the Veterans Administration per diem. Residents covered under Medicare or Medicaid will be responsible for their recipient liability amount.

May a resident leave the Veterans Home after admission?

A. Residents may take a pass or leave at anytime while living at the Veterans Home. However, rent will be charged for all days they are absent, unless they are hospitalized in a VA Medical Center or non-VA hospital at the Veterans Administration's expense.

Are residents eligible to receive Medicaid?

A. If the resident resides on the Basic Care Unit they are not eligible to receive Medicaid benefits. If the resident resides on the Skilled Nursing Unit they may be eligible to receive Medicaid benefits if the resident meets the financial eligibility requirements.

Is the North Dakota Veterans Home Medicare/Medicaid Certified?

A. The Basic Care Unit is not Medicare/Medicaid Certified; however, we meet North Dakota licensing standards for basic care and the Veterans Administration on domicilary cares. The Skilled Care Unit is Medicare/Medicaid Certified. You may see our most recent survey results at www.medicare.gov.

Does the North Dakota Veterans Home provide transportation to the Fargo VA Medical Center?

A. Yes, the Veterans Home does provide transportation to the Fargo VA Medical Center.

Is the North Dakota Veterans Home part of the Fargo VA Medical Center?

A. The State of North Dakota pursuant to the North Dakota Century Code Number 37-15-01 operates the North Dakota Veterans Home.

The North Dakota Veterans Home is not part of the VA Medical Center. The Federal Government through United States Department of Disabled Veterans Administration operates the VA Medical Centers.

Does the North Dakota Veterans Home have a Dementia Unit?

A. The North Dakota Veterans Home does not have a Dementia Unit or the means to adequately meet the needs of a wondering resident.

What type of belongings may I bring?

A. The North Dakota Veterans Home provides a bed, nightstand, desk, desk chair, and side chair. The Veterans Home also provides all linens; such as, sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, etc.

All rooms have limited space available. We allow the resident to bring clothing, personal items, pictures, a small t.v., radio, alarm clock, etc. as space allows. The storage for personal items is approximately 2-3 suitcases.

May I have a vehicle?

A. The North Dakota Veterans Home has space for a vehicle; however, you must provide current proof of insurance, registration, and a valid driver's license.

What types of activities are available?

A. The North Dakota Veterans Home offers a variety of activities to suit the interest and social needs of our residents. Some of the activities offered at the Veterans Home are scenic drives, bingo, working in the woodshop, painting ceramics, recreation room, work therapy program, volunteer program, computers with Internet and games available, t.v. lounges, libraries, card games, pool tables, etc.
