ND Senator Hoeven Announces 3 Tribal Housing Grant Awards

Posted 3/17/14 (Mon)

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven announced today that North Dakota will receive three awards from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) totaling more than $13 million for Indian housing. The funds will come from HUD’s Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) Program.

“Developing safe, affordable housing in Indian country is absolutely necessary to ensure the wellbeing of our tribes,” said Hoeven. “These HUD funds will help build stronger communities as good housing options help foster success.”

HUD’s IDBG provides affordable housing activities on Indian reservations and Indian areas. Grants can be used for housing development, housing services, and for crime prevention and safety.

The awards include $3.6 million for the Fort Berthold Housing Authority; $2.6 million for Spirit Lake Housing Authority and $7.2 million for the Trenton Indian Housing Authority.

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Hoeven has worked to secure funding in annual appropriations bills for housing and community development programs that address North Dakota priorities.
