Mandan, N.D. – A 100th Anniversary memorial ceremony for Pvt. Everett Henry Gilbert who died from complications of pneumonia in 1918 while in training on the University of North Dakota (UND) campus for action in World War I is set for Friday, October 19, 2018 starting at 10:00am.
Pvt. Gilbert was a registrant of Golden Valley County and was born in Mandan on February 2, 1897 of English-American parents. He was inducted into the Army in Beach, North Dakota on September 1, 1918. His occupation was a telegraph operator. Pvt. Gilbert was a member of the UND Student Army Training Corps (SATC) during the summer and fall of 1918.
The combined army training units on the UND campus consisted of over 500 men. Between October 14 and November 4, 1918, 27 of those soldiers succumbed to complications of pneumonia, a result of the 1918 flu pandemic, while in training for battle in the European theater of World War I. Pvt. Everett Henry Gilbert passed away on October 21, 1918.
The memorial ceremony will observe the 100th Anniversary of Pvt. Gilbert's death, and will also provide a symbolic memorial for all 27 fallen SATC comrades.
VFW Post 707 and American Legion Post 40 combined honor guard and the North Dakota National Guard Funeral Honors will provide Full Military Honors graveside. The gravesite is at Mandan Union Cemetery at 1600 Mandan Ave. NE, Lot #80, Grave 6 in the Northeast corner of the cemetery. The public is welcome to attend.
