Burgum to sign proclamation Monday during celebration to mark adoption of Patriots’ Day holiday in North Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. (April 11, 2019) – Sponsors and supporters of a recently signed bill that makes North Dakota the fifth state to observe Patriots’ Day as an official state holiday will hold a celebration Monday at the Capitol in Bismarck, with Gov. Doug Burgum signing a proclamation.
House Bill 1169, introduced by Rep. Austen Schauer, R-West Fargo, was signed into law by the governor on March 19. The law designates the third Monday in April as Patriots’ Day and directs the governor to issue a proclamation to commemorate the start of the American Revolutionary War and the battles of Lexington and Concord.
Members of the Bismarck Century High School Patriot Marching Band will kick off the colorful public event, performing patriotic songs beginning at about 9:40 a.m. in Memorial Hall. The official ceremony will start at 10 a.m.
Scheduled speakers include Burgum; emcee Jim Shaw of Fargo; House and Senate leaders; state Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler; and Brig. Gen. Robert Becklund, deputy adjutant general of the North Dakota National Guard. Secretary of State Al Jaeger will join the governor for the proclamation signing.
