Not a registrant, enlisted prior. Born, Jamestown, N. Dak., Aug. 29, 1899, of American parents. Occupation - student. Enlisted in the Marine Corps at Fargo on May 9, 1917. Sent to Mare Island, Calif. Served in 79th Company, Quantico, Va., to Jan., 1918; arrived in France, Feb. 8, 1918, and served there to death. Grade: Corporal, Sept. 25, 1917. Engagements: Toulon Sector; Aisne Defensive; Chateau-Thierry Sector. Awarded French Croix de Guerre with silver star, under Order No. 11,927 "D," dated Nov. 25, 1918, General Headquarters, French Armies of the East, with the following citation: "On June 6, 1918, he displayed remarkable coolness and spirit of decision in command of his automatic riflemen under a violent fire. He contributed to the capture of Pouregches."
