Tax Commissioner Reminds Taxpayers of Extension Deadline

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday, October 8, 2019

Contact:  Lorie Bowker, Individual Income Tax Supervisor, 701.328.1296; Liliya Montgomery, Individual Income Tax Auditor, 701.328.3477

Bismarck, N.D. –Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger reminds individual income taxpayers who filed for an extension that their deadline is approaching.

“The individual income tax filing extension deadline is Tuesday, October 15,” Rauschenberger said. “We estimate that in 2019 approximately 30,000 North Dakota individual income taxpayers filed for an extension with the IRS, and many of those have yet to file their North Dakota return.”

Taxpayers who filed for an extension must have paid the tax owed by the April deadline. Those who did not pay in full will be charged interest on the unpaid balance. If a taxpayer does not file by the extension deadline, penalties will apply.

Taxpayers who were granted a federal extension may file their returns through October 15. While electronic filing is encouraged, paper filers must have their return postmarked by October 15, or they may drop it off at the Office of State Tax Commissioner between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Taxpayers may call 701.328.1247 with any questions about their state income tax return.
