Coordinated Training

The North Dakota GIS Technical Committee (GISTC) coordinates Esri training if we determine there is a large enough common need to make the course cost-effective for the students.  The training will be conducted with an on-site or web-based Esri instructor. Training facilities are in Bismarck, using a training lab typically located at a state agency. If you are with state, county, or city government in North Dakota and would like to express an interest in an Esri class please contact us, telling us of the name of the course you are interested in and how many people would like to attend. We will place your information on a list and will send a notice out to the GIS listserv asking for similar expressions of interest. If there is enough interest and it appears that the course cost will be economic per student, the GISTC will proceed to develop a schedule for the course working with those who would like to attend.

GIS Software and Training for North Dakota K-12 Schools

The North Dakota Career and Technical Education Department (CTE) has made arrangements with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) to provide free GIS software to all K-12 public and private schools in North Dakota, including ten North Dakota colleges. North Dakota is the first state in the country to make this program available to community colleges. The software is free to all North Dakota schools even if they have not participated in training provided through CTE.

CTE coordinates training designed to teach North Dakota educators how to teach GIS as a standalone High School class. The first training was held in July 2004 for nine North Dakota educators. Dates, locations, and additional information about future training will be available on the CTE web site.

The training and software is available to any North Dakota public or private school. The modular design of this program will facilitate schools to incorporate GIS units in other discipline areas such as math, science, geography, and agriculture classes. Modules could be utilized in middle school classrooms.
