GIS Hub Utilized during Flood Fight

The GIS Hub web services have experienced unprecedented usage during North Dakota's flood fight. Geographic Information System (GIS) is a software system used to obtain, manage, observe, evaluate, and present geographic data. Web services on the GIS Hub are used to stream out data to browser-based applications and to desktop GIS software. State agencies, local government, the private sector, and the public are users of these services. Data being utilized for the flood fight includes:

Base Map Data
  • Aerial photography
  • Roads
  • Water
  • Transportation
  • Boundary data
Operational Data
  • Sand bag filling sites
  • Levees
  • Protected areas

During May, GIS Hub’s web services experienced over a million map image requests. Over 80% of those requests came from the Department of Emergency Services. The remaining requests came from the Department of Transportation Travel Information Map and other web services as indicated in the graph below.
