Recap

  • Patching websites reminder
    • Modern content management systems (CMS) must be continually updated to remain secure. Ensure you have a website update/patching agreement in place with your website vendor.
  • Compliance Scanning
    • ITD offers a compliance scanning/testing service to help agencies ensure their websites are compliant with accessibility guidelines. More information can be found here.
  • Drupal Support
    • Drupal 6 reached end of life in February. Drupal 7 support will end several months after the release of Drupal 9, likely sometime in 2020. Drupal 8 was released in November 2015. ITD is currently evaluating its maturity. When developing a new website, agencies should ensure they are using either Drupal 7 or 8.
  • Screen Capture Software
    • Open Broadcaster Software is a free open-source screen capture program that works well for recording presentations and making instructional videos. By combining screen capture software with a high-quality microphone, agencies can make instructional videos that take the place of written documentation or in-person training sessions.
  • Broken Link Scanning
    • If an agency wishes to scan their own website for broken links and spelling errors, they might want to consider InSite by Inspyder.
  • MABU Presentation
    • Video Vignettes - Short, interview style videos that allow organizations to tell their story. This is a very cost-effective alternative to a standard promotional video.
    • Virtual Tours - Virtual tours bring Google Street View inside buildings. For example, when viewing Agency MABU on Google Street View, users can click on the front door and virtually walk through the building.
    • Aerial Imaging - MABU uses a number of different drones for aerial imaging. Additionally, they can overlay 3D models over the footage. This can be used to show how an area would have looked if historic structures were still in place, or how it will look when a construction project is completed.
    • Interactive Content - Interactive 3D content can allow users to learn about and experience concepts in ways not possible with 2D or non-interactive content. An example of this is available on the Department of Health's website.
