The State Superintendent student cabinet is a group of approximately 20 student’s grades 4-12 from across the state who discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students throughout North Dakota. Members meet several times throughout the school year with the State Superintendent. The student cabinet members are advisors that act as liaisons between the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and the students of North Dakota. Students may apply for the cabinet in March 2018 by obtaining an application from this website. Members are chosen by a committee of North Dakota Department of Public Instruction representatives based on the applicant’s response to questions. Past topics discussed by the student cabinet include: school dropout rate, student leadership, teacher shortage, the North Dakota graduation rule, testing, school climate, school funding, and education technology.
