The department has defined academic achievement level descriptors (ALDs), also known as performance or achievement standards, in all core subject areas. The ALDs describe what a student knows and can do to demonstrate proficiency on a content standard. ALDs have been identified in four categories of student proficiency: (1) novice, (2) partially proficient, (3) proficient, (4) advanced. The proficient level is designated as that level that represents how well a student should demonstrate achievement within a subject at a particular grade level.
