Basic wildland firefighting training to be held

Posted on 6/7/2018

Bismarck, ND - Basic wildland firefighting training sponsored by the ND Department of Emergency Services, ND Forest Service, ND Indian Affairs Commission, ND Fire Marshal’s Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs, ND Firefighters Association, and the United Tribes Technical College, will be held Saturday, June 9 through Friday, June 15, 2018.

This collaborative seven day training will provide an introduction to wildland fire behavior, basic wildland firefighter training and skills, and will culminate in a full scale live fire exercise which will be held at Standing Rock Reservation.

The purpose of this training is to enhance wildland firefighting skills among our volunteer firefighters and fire departments across the state. Trainees consist of ND National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, the tribal jurisdictions of Standing Rock and Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation, and volunteer firefighters from across North Dakota.

In addition to increasing response capacity in their home communities, successful trainees will be eligible to fight fires in other areas of the country on a paid basis, enhancing their economic opportunities in the future.

“This will be a great training event and an even greater opportunity for firefighters to enhance their skills and grow their professional toolbox,” said Cody Schulz, ND Director of Homeland Security. “Firefighters who are successful here will be able to fight fire wherever they are needed across the state or even the nation, which will contribute to their professional careers.”

The media is invited to participate in two parts of the upcoming training:

  • Thursday, June 14 - Full Scale Functional Fire Exercise - Standing Rock Reservation - All Day - During the exercise, N.D. Army National Guard aviators will be on site operating a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The aircraft will be equipped with a 640-gallon Bambi bucket, which is used to drop water during fire response operations. Location and details will be provided to interested media.
  • Friday, June 15 - Graduation Ceremony - United Tribes Technical College - 8:00 am to 9:00 am - Cafeteria Meeting Room
