Circumstances:

FM1c/E-3 Warren G. Nelson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 13, 1942 and received his basic training in San Diego, CA. Warren was assigned to the Echo Company, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, and was sent to the west-central Pacific. He participated in the invasion of Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, and lost his life in action on November 20, 1943. He was an only son. He was survived by his parents, Oscar and Lillie Nelson, and his sister, Marie. See Obituary.

Biography:

Field Musician First Class Warren Gordon Nelson was born April 14, 1923 on the family farm in Rubin Township of Nelson Count, near Lakota, ND. In the early 1930's the family moved to Lakota, where Warren resided until he joined the Marines. He graduated with the Lakota High School class of 1941 and enrolled at Mayville State Teachers College in the summer of that year. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 13, 1942 and received his basic training in San Diego, CA. Warren was assigned to the Echo Company, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, and was sent to the west-central Pacific. He participated in the invasion of Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, and lost his life in action on November 20, 1943. He was an only son. He was survived by his parents, Oscar and Lillie Nelson, and his sister, Marie.
