Circumstances:

On July 17, 1958 when the USAF B-66 Destroyer in which he was assigned as a gunner, in support of the Lebanon Conflict (July 1, 1958-November 1, 1958), ran out of fuel Airman First Class Rausch and two others parachuted out of the plane before it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. He was not among the two survivors. His remains were never recovered. Airman First Class Julius Joseph Rausch was declared dead July 26, 1958.

The B-66 Destroyer Memorial was dedicated 27 August 2004 at the Wright -Patterson AFB in Ohio. Back side of memorial.

A memorial headstone is located at St. Mary's Cemetery in Dazey, ND. See Grave Marker.

The incident has been included in the book "Glory Days: The Untold Story of the Men Who Flew the B-66 Destroyer into the Face of Fear" by Wolfgang W.E. Samuel. 

Biography:

Born: February 5, 1935 to Anton and Margaret Rausch in Mott, ND. Graduated from Dazey, ND High School in 1953. Joined the USAF October 28, 1954.
