State: North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs
The North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs maintains discharges from 1941 to present. This includes National Guard federalized service time and active duty training time. Information pre-1941 is very limited. The only source available to us is a four book series titled, "Office Roster of North Dakota Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, World War 1917-1918."
Requests for copies of discharge papers may be made by the Veteran or the next of kin of a deceased Veteran which include a surviving spouse that has not remarried, father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother. It is our responsibility to ensure, to the best of our ability, that the discharge is released only to the veteran or a "duly authorized representative."
Contact the North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (ND-DVA) to determine if the discharge is on record 1-866-634-8387 or 701-239-7165.
