Periods of Conflict Defined

To be eligible for ND Veterans Employment Preference the Veteran or eligible spouse must:

  • Be a US Citizen
  • Be a ND Resident
  • Meet the minimum qualifications for position applying for

Veteran must have served on continuous federalized active military duty for;

  • One hundred eighty days; or
  • The full period for which the individual was called or ordered to active military duty
    • For reasons other than training; and
    • Was discharged or released under other than dishonorable conditions.
      • A discharge reflecting:
        • "Expiration of term of service" or;
        • "Completion of required service" or;
        • Words to that effect qualifies the shorter term of service as making the individual a veteran.
  • At least one day during a period of war or;
  • Received a qualifying Campaign or Expedition medal; and was
  • Discharged under other than “Dishonorable Conditions”
  • Including veterans who Died in the line of duty

Current uniform period of service dates for periods of armed conflict include:

World War II:  

December 7, 1941, through December 31, 1946

Korean War:  

June 27, 1950, through January 31, 1955

Vietnam War:  

August 5, 1964, through May 7, 1975

Gulf War:  

August 2, 1990, through January 2, 1992,

Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan):  

September 11, 2001, to present day

Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF):  

September 11, 2001, to present day

Operation New Dawn (OND-Iraq):  

September 11, 2001, to present day
