Sales Tax Geographic Information System (GIS) Help

Troubleshooting:

Basic navigation is best achieved by using the buttons on the left of the map image. Using the browser “Back” button or incorrectly using the navigation buttons, may lock-up the tax rate program. If this happens, you will need to close your Browser by clicking on the “X” in the right-hand corner of your screen and then restart the program.

Overview Map:

Use this button to toggle on or off the overview or “birds-eye” view of the map. The red rectangle shown in the overview map is the current zoom extent. In the overview map, you can reposition the red zoom extent by clicking on the overview map. You can pan to a different location by clicking the desired area in the "Location Map".

Zoom In:

Select this button and then click on any area of the map to zoom in on an area. You can also select a rectangular area by clicking on a spot and dragging the cursor to form a rectangle or box. The view will redraw to the area selected. Note: When you select the “Zoom In” button, the white text will change to yellow, letting you know this feature is active.

Zoom Out:

Select this button and then click on any area of the map to zoom out. You can also select a rectangular area by clicking on a spot and dragging the cursor to form a rectangle or box. The view will redraw to the area selected. Note: When you select the “Zoom Out” button, the white text will change to yellow, letting you know this feature is active.

Zoom Full:

Select this button and then click on any area of the map to zoom out to the full extent of the map.

Pan:

Click on this button and then hold the cursor down on any part of the map and drag in the direction you wish to view. You can Pan by using this button or click on the North, East, South, or West on the map edge. The view will redraw, with the selected point in the center of the view. Note: When you select the “Pan” button, the white text will change to yellow, letting you know this feature is active.

Identify:

You can find specific information about a city location by selecting the “Identify” button. Zoom in on an area, click on the Layers and select the “Towns and Cities” radio button. Click on a city and detailed information will appear in the area below the map. Note: When you select the “Identify” button, the white text will change to yellow, letting you know this feature is active.

Clear Select:

Clears selected features, selected locations, and the results of a query or identify option.

Get Tax:

Click on Get Tax and then click on a specific area of the map to display the tax rate for the selected location. Note: When you select the “Get Tax” button, the red white text will change to yellow, letting you know this feature is active.

Find City:

Click on Find City to search for information on a specific city. The panel below the map will provide an area to enter a city name. Enter a city name and click on the “Locate” button.

Find Address:

Enter the address and press the “Locate” button. To find another address, press the “Locate Another Address” button at the bottom of the address screen. To clear the address information press the “Clear” button.

Other Tools:

Layers/Legend Buttons: At the right side of the map you will notice two buttons labeled Layers and Legend. These buttons toggle the Layers view or the Legend view. The Layers view displays the names of the available layers (at the current zoom scale – as you zoom in on an area the Legend options change), and allows you to make a certain features visible or invisible. Selecting a layer will set that layer to be active. Setting a layer active makes it the "current" layer, allowing buttons such as IDENTIFY to be used. If the layer is changed, you must click on the REFRESH MAP button to make your changes take effect. The Layer-Legend list panel has two modes, controlled by clicking either the Layer or Legend buttons. Note: As you Zoom In on an area, the Layer options will change.

  • The Visible checkbox (1st column) is for turning each layer on or off - the change takes effect when you click the Refresh Map button.
  • The Active radio button (2nd column) is for selecting features for the layer. Use these to view Cities, State and Federal roads, and Counties. Click the Refresh Map button to complete a change.

Refresh Map:

This button is located to the lower right side of map. Use this after selecting or deselecting layers for display.
