Tax Commissioner Reminds Taxpayers of Extension Deadline

Bismarck, N.D. –Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger would like to remind taxpayers who filed for an extension that their deadline is approaching.

“The individual income tax filing extension deadline is Monday, October 16,” Rauschenberger said. “We estimate that in 2017 approximately 40,000 North Dakota individual income taxpayers filed for an extension with the IRS, and nearly half of those have yet to file their North Dakota return.”

Taxpayers who filed for an extension must have paid the tax owed by the April deadline.  Those who did not pay in full will be charged interest on the unpaid balance. If a taxpayer does not file by the extension deadline, penalties will apply.

Taxpayers who were granted an extension may file their returns through October 16.  While electronic filing is encouraged, paper filers must have their return postmarked by October 16, or they may drop it off at the Office of State Tax Commissioner between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Taxpayers may call 701.328.1247 with any questions about their state income tax return.

Rauschenberger also reminds taxpayers who have filed for an extension and are in or affected by a federally declared disaster area they are allowed more time.  Details may be found at www.irs.gov.
