Rauschenberger: Individual Income Tax Filing Extension Deadline Approaching

Bismarck, N.D. – Although most North Dakota individual income taxpayers filed before the April 18 deadline this year, Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger would like to remind taxpayers who filed for extension that their deadline is fast approaching.

“We estimate that approximately 40,000 North Dakota individual income taxpayers filed for extension this year,” Rauschenberger stated. “The filing extension deadline for these taxpayers is Monday, October 17.”

Taxpayers who took advantage of the extension must have paid the tax owed by the April deadline.  Those who did not pay in full will be charged interest on the unpaid balance. If a taxpayer does not file by the extension deadline, penalties will apply.

Taxpayers granted an extension may file their returns through October 17.  While electronic filing is encouraged, paper filers must have their return postmarked by October 17, or may drop it off at the Office of State Tax Commissioner between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Taxpayers may call 701.328.1247 with any questions about their state income tax return.
