Office of State Tax Commissioner Extends Hours on April 18 Tax Deadline

Bismarck, N.D. – The North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner will be extending office hours until 9 p.m. CDT on Monday, April 18, this year’s individual income tax filing deadline.

“We typically extend our hours for individual income tax filers to be more accessible to taxpayers on tax day,” said Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger. “This allows taxpayers to stop in or call with any last-minute questions they have before filing.”

Taxpayers may stop in to the Office of State Tax Commissioner at the North Dakota State Capitol Building on the 16th floor for assistance with and to drop off their individual income taxes.  The north door of the building will be open on April 18 until 9 p.m.

“It is important to note that if taxpayers are unable to file by the April 18 deadline, they will need to file an application for an extension prior to the deadline,” said Rauschenberger. “However, we remind individuals who owe taxes that they should make a payment by April 18 to avoid interest.”

An application for extension may be filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  Extensions that are granted for federal returns are also recognized for North Dakota returns.

Taxpayers may call 701.328.1247 with any additional questions about their state income tax return.

The individual income tax deadline is on April 18 this year due to Emancipation Day, a federal holiday in Washington, D.C., falling on a Saturday.  In turn, April 15 is Emancipation Day observed and the IRS there will be closed.  The North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner will be open normal business hours on April 15.
