Rauschenberger: Free Income Tax Return Preparation
BISMARCK, N.D. – Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger encourages taxpayers to use the free income tax preparation and filing help provided by local Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites.
The IRS, AARP, and various other organizations, partner together to provide assistance in preparing and filing both federal and state income tax returns free of charge. "The sites are staffed by volunteers who are trained and certified by the IRS," said Rauschenberger.
The TCE and VITA sites are located in various community centers, public libraries, and other public locations. "The volunteers who provide the tax counseling and preparation of income tax returns are usually retired accountants and other professionals who receive additional training every year," said Rauschenberger. "These highly trained individuals are knowledgeable about the federal and state forms, and may identify credits, and other deductions that taxpayers might otherwise miss."
The TCE program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and AARP. "You do not need to be a member of AARP to take advantage of this free service" said Rauschenberger. TCE sites provide free services for all individuals with no age requirements and no income limitations. There are eleven TCE sites located in North Dakota.
The IRS also sponsors the VITA program, which offers free tax help for taxpayers whose income is $52,000 or less. The program is available to qualified individuals who file basic tax returns. There are twenty-one VITA sites in different communities in North Dakota.
