Renterís Refund Filing Deadline Extended To June 30

BISMARCK, N.D. Ė State Tax Commissioner Cory Fong announced today that the deadline for filing for the Renterís Refund has been extended to June 30, 2009. The previous deadline was May 31.

ďThe Renterís Refund is an important program,Ē said Fong. ďIt provides assistance to those who need it most - our low-income senior citizens and disabled persons.Ē

The Renterís Refund is a program for low-income senior citizens and disabled persons to receive a refund for part of the money they paid as rent for their home or apartment.

ďItís important that we get the word out that the deadline is extended,Ē said Fong. ďWe want to be sure that everyone who thinks they might be eligible for a refund has enough time to apply.Ē

The Tax Department administers the Renterís Refund, which is available to low-income renters who are 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled. There are certain additional requirements in order to qualify for the Renterís Refund. For instance, to qualify for the program, a renterís 2008 income cannot exceed $17,500.

If 20 percent of the total amount of rent paid is more than four percent of their 2008 income, they could be eligible for a refund. The maximum refund amount is $240. For example, if a renter pays $200 per month in rent ($2,400 per year) and the renterís income is $8,000, twenty percent of $2,400 is $480, and four percent of $8,000 is $320. The amount that the renter is entitled equals $160 ($480 minus $320). Renters who qualify for the refund can expect to receive the check within about two weeks of mailing in the application.

Fong encourages people who think they may qualify to call the Tax Department in Bismarck at 701.328.3127 or 877.328.7088 option 6, for more information and for an application. The application form is also available on the Tax Department web site at www.nd.gov/tax/property/forms/renters-refund-application.pdf.
