Tax Time Is Also Time To Apply For Gas Tax Refund
BISMARCK, N.D. – As individuals are preparing their income tax returns, Tax Commissioner Cory Fong today suggested that farmers, ranchers, and other eligible consumers, consider applying early for a refund of motor fuel taxes paid during 2006.
“Even though the deadline is a few months off,” said Fong, “this time of year many individuals, such as ag producers, are already getting information together in order to prepare their income tax returns. We are suggesting they consider taking it one step further and, if they think they are eligible, apply for the gas tax refund.”
State law provides for the motor vehicle fuel tax refund program for certain consumers, such as farmers and ranchers, using fuel in non-licensed machinery and non-licensed equipment. The refund is for gasoline or gasohol taxes paid on purchases made during 2006. The deadline for applying for the refund is June 30, 2007.
“This refund process provides the means for funding several programs, two of which are ag-related,” said Fong.
For each refund requested, four different programs, including two agriculture-related programs, will receive a total of eight cents per gallon based on the refunds requested by agricultural producers.
- Four cents goes to the agriculture research fund created by the 1997 Legislature.
- The Agricultural Products Utilization Commission (APUC) receives two cents.
- One cent is provided to the state ethanol production incentive fund.
- And, one cent remains in the township highway aid fund.
