Free File is a joint venture between the government and certain tax software companies (listed below). The companies listed below offer free e-filing of your federal tax return, and in some cases your state return, if you meet certain criteria.

In some instances, the criteria might include qualifying for the Earned Income Credit (EIC). To find out if you qualify for the EIC, visit the IRS Web site at http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc601.html

Please read the descriptions of each company carefully to see if you qualify, and to learn what service is provided.

Before you e-file, please note the following:

  • You must file your federal and state return using the same e-file provider, whether it is an online service or an off-the-shelf product.
  • If you file your federal return by paper you will not be able to e-file your state return.
  • If you have any questions or problems with an electronic service provider's website, including error messages received while attempting to use their services, you must contact that service provider's customer service for help.
