Many professional tax preparers participate in the Federal/State electronic filing program. Check with your preparer to see if they participate.
Preparers who provide this service are called Electronic Return Originators (ERO). They must register with the IRS to provide this service and to test their software.
Before you can e-file your return, you must complete it as you normally would. You can do this yourself or have your tax preparer do it for you.
Take your returns with your W2s, 1099s, and supporting schedules to a participating tax preparer. If you choose to have your refund directly deposited into your bank account, you will need to provide proof of your account, such as a voided check.
A number of communities have Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites. These are sponsored by the IRS, AARP, and other organizations. Many of these sites offer free e-filing along with basic tax preparation assistance for low to moderate incomes.
The cost of e-filing through a tax preparer varies. Talk to your tax preparer.
