Individual Income Electronic Filing
Electronic Filing
For over ten years now North Dakota has provided taxpayers with the option to electronically file their individual income tax returns through a tax preparer, by using the IRS Fed State E-file, or with the Free File Alliance. The following chart will help you learn more about the three methods. To find out which method, Free File, IRS E-File, or WebFile, to use, use this simple interactive tool. By answering a few easy questions, you will learn which method will work best for you.

The free e-file services are available through a partnership between the state, the IRS, and the private tax software industry. A number of tax software companies offer to prepare and file tax returns free for taxpayers who meet certain criteria. |
Your tax information is keyed into a computer and sent electronically to the IRS, which then sends the state portion to the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner. |
WebFile is an electronic filing option for full-year residents filing simple returns. With WebFile, taxpayers may transmit their North Dakota return directly to the state Tax Department. Taxpayers must have a completed copy of their federal return before they use WebFile. |
