FAQ Articles

If I electronically file my return before April 15th, and have a balance due, do I have to pay the balance at the time I file the return?

No. One of the conveniences of electronically filing is that you can electronically file your return early but make your payment of a tax balance due at any time up to and including the April 15th due date. You can pay your balance due by check, money order, or by credit card.

If you pay by check or money order, you will need to complete Form ND-1V and submit it along with your payment to our office. Form ND-1V will be provided to you by your tax preparer or, if you electronically file yourself, by your software program after you receive confirmation that your e-filed return was accepted by our office. If, for whatever reason, you do not receive a Form ND-1V, you may submit your payment with a cover letter containing your name, social security number, address, a statement that you are paying the balance due on your North Dakota individual income tax return, and the applicable tax year.

You may pay your tax balance due with a MasterCard®, American Express® Card, Discover® Card, or Visa® Card. The North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner partners with Fidelity National Information Services (FIS), an authorized IRS payment processor, to provide online tax payment services. Our office does not receive any portion of the convenience fees collected by FIS, which cover the cost of providing this service. You can use the online payment option, to make a payment by Echeck, Credit Card, or Debit card.
