How does someone fraudulently file a tax return with my name?

Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen information to file a tax return to claim a refund.  An identity thief generally files early in the tax season in order to file before you do. You may be unaware that you are a victim until you try to file your taxes and realize your taxes have already been filed using your Social Security Number.
