Veteran Homes were established by an Act of Congress in 1887. Certain lands were set aside in a number of states and territories for the establishment and maintenance of homes for Veteran Union Soldiers. The North Dakota Veterans Home was established in 1891 and has been in operation since 1893. The North Dakota Veterans Home is owned and operated by the State of North Dakota and is currently providing care to North Dakota veterans and spouses.
