Anhydrous ammonia tank inspections

The Anhydrous Ammonia Inspection Program provides initial and periodic inspections of anhydrous ammonia storage facilities, including storage containers, system piping, safety equipment and nurse tanks.

The responsibilities for this inspection program are uniquely shared by utilizing the resources of the State Fire and Tornado Fund and the North Dakota Department of Agriculture. Inspections of storage facilities and providing technical information are handled by the Insurance Department through the State Fire and Tornado Fund and the Boiler Inspection Program. Administration and enforcement for the Anhydrous Ammonia Inspection Program are the responsibilities of the Commissioner of Agriculture.

More than 480 permanent storage containers, ranging in size from 6,000 water gallons to 96,000 water gallons are subject to inspections every five years. Included with the permanent storage facilities are an estimated 10,000 nurse tanks associated with these facilities. Also subject to inspection are anhydrous ammonia distribution facilities and refrigerated storage facilities.

In addition to statewide inspections, this program also administers the Anhydrous Ammonia Tank Lock program in McKenzie, Williams, Walsh, Pembina and Cavalier Counties.

This pilot program requires that all unattended anhydrous nurse tanks are locked with an approved locking device.

This program was approved by the 2003 Legislature and later expanded in during the 2005 Session.
