Resident insurance producer renewal requirements

Effective Jan. 1, 2010, in order to maintain an insurance producer license, every insurance producer, regardless of continuing education requirements or exemptions, must biennially by the last day of their birth month:

• Complete a renewal application,
• Pay the $25 fee,
• If continuing education is required, have the required number of continuing education hours on file with the Department.

Insurance producers whose last continuing education reporting date was Jan. 31, 2008, must complete the required number of hours, and file a renewal application along with the $25 fee by the last day of their birth month in 2010.

Insurance producers whose last continuing education reporting date was Jan. 31, 2009, must complete the required number of hours, and file a renewal application along with the $25 fee by the last day of their birth month in 2011.

Insurance producers who first received a license in 2007 and whose previous continuing education due date was Jan. 31, 2010, must complete the required number of hours, and file a renewal application along with the $25 fee by the last day of their birth month in 2010.

Insurance producers who first received a license in 2008 must complete the required number of hours, and file a renewal application along with the $25 fee by the last day of their birth month in 2011.

Insurance producers who first receive a license in 2009 must complete the required number of hours and file a renewal application along with the $25 fee by the last day of their birth month in 2012.

Insurance producers licensed only for credit, surety, travel/baggage, title, bail bonds, legal expense or a combination of these lines of authority are not required to complete continuing education, but must file a biennial renewal application and pay the $25 fee. Those licensed in 2007 or earlier must file by the last day of their birth month in 2010. Those licensed in 2008 must file by the last day of their birth month in 2011. Those licensed in 2009 must file by the last day of their birth month in 2012.

No continuing education is required of an insurance producer who is at least 62 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2010 and who has a combined total years of continuous licensure as an insurance producer and years of age which equals 85. The insurance producer must still file a biennial renewal application and pay the $25 fee.

Insurance producers licensed for Life & Annuities or Accident & Health or Property or Casualty or Personal Lines or Crop Hail must complete, by their due date, 24 hours of continuing education three of which are in ethics.

Please note:

1. There is no grace period after the due date. If not renewed before the expiration date, your license and appointments will be cancelled and you will have to reapply with an initial application and $100 fee.

2. Before your renewal can be processed, you must complete the required number of approved continuing education credits and the course provider must have reported the completion to our office. Your record must show compliance with continuing education requirements.

The filing fee is $25 and is paid by credit card or electronic check. Filing electronically will also require a $5 transaction fee which must be paid along with the North Dakota filing fee.

The Department strongly encourages filing electronic applications, however, if you need to submit a paper application, click here to print a paper form.

Complete the form, print and mail to the Department along with the $25 fee. Paper applications must be received the Insurance Department by the last day of the insurance producer's birth month in the due date year.
