Resident: Adding lines of authority

Every individual applicant for an insurance producer license must qualify by passing exams for the lines of authority they wish to hold on their license.

Applicants are not required to attend pre-licensing education (preparation can be done by classroom instruction or by self-study). The applicant must pass the appropriate exams and make application to the Department within one year of passing the exam.

Study material and classroom schedules can be obtained from a number of prelicensing providers. The education resources document near the bottom of this page contains a list of prelicensing providers offering classroom and self-study instruction.

Exams are administered by Pearson VUE. For additional exam information or to schedule an exam online, go to Pearson VUE's website. Here you will find links to the Licensing Information Bulletin and exam content outlines, locations of test centers, and you can make an exam reservation. To schedule an exam by phone, call Pearson VUE at 877.224.0235.

An applicant for the line of variable life and annuities, must first be licensed as a securities salesperson with the North Dakota Securities Commissioner (701.328.2910) N.D. Admin. Code 45-02-02-11

Business entities must have at least one designated principal producer licensed in North Dakota for the lines of authority requested.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you answer all questions completely and disclose all information requested. In addition to the information requested in the questions on the application form, licensed insurance producers are requried to report to the Commissioner within 30 days any administrative actions or any criminal conviction in any jurisdiction (N.D.C.C. § 26.1-26-45.1). This requirement to report does not allow you to exclude any criminal convictions. Please read Bulletin 2009-2. If you have any questions about what needs to be reported or disclosed, contact the Department before submitting your application.

You can submit your application electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Go to the NIPR website. Choose "Initial License" under "Resident" on the left side of the page.
