Company appointment and termination requirements
North Dakota law requires notice of appointment within 30 days of either the signing of the contract or the company receiving the first application from the producer (whichever is later). The appointment should be submitted with a requested effective date that is not later than either of these two occurrences AND it must be submitted so that it is received by the Department within 30 days of that date.
Notice of termination of appointments must be filed with the Department within 30 days following the effective date of the termination.
All appointments must be renewed annually. (See Appointment Renewals below for details.)
Filing company appointments and terminations
Unless there are compelling reasons to submit on paper, companies should file agent appointments and terminations electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Contact NIPR for information on filing electronically.
If you cannot file electronically, use SFN 50291 Appointment/Termination. The fee for an appointment is $10.00. There is no charge for terminations of appointments.
Appointment renewals
IMPORTANT NOTICE OF CHANGE: Payment by electronic check will replace payment by paper check. Payment must be made by credit card or electronic check. Paper checks will no longer be accepted.
All appointment renewals are processed electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Do not send payment directly to the Department.
The renewal invoice and a list of appointments due for renewal are on the NIPR website beginning March 1 each year. Appointment renewal fees are due for every insurance producer on that list. You are not allowed to terminate or cross off any names. Appointments added after March 1 do not need to be renewed until the following year.
Payment must be made by credit card or electronic check. Paper checks will no longer be accepted.
A credit card processing fee of 3.5% will be added to the total paid by credit card.
There is no check processing fee for electronic checks.
If the invoice is not paid on time, all appointments are cancelled May 1. There is no grace period.
To process appointment renewals on the internet:
- Go to the NIPR website
- Click on Company Appointment Renewals
- Click on the Continue to Appointment Renewals button
- Continue to the Company Search Page and enter a company identifier (company cocode, FEIN, and/or company name)
Your electronic appointment renewal will be displayed. You can print/pay the invoice; view the report of appointment renewals; print the report; download the report as text (delimited); and download the report as XML.
Follow the prompts to pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) or electronic check.
Help screens and NIPR Customer Support are available to guide you throughout the process.
The costs involved with the electronic appointment renewal process are:
- $10 state annual appointment renewal fee for each appointment shown on the renewal list.
- NIPR renewal processing fee based on the number of appointment renewals on the invoice (0 to 100 renewals $1.00/invoice; 101 to 2,999 renewals $5.00/invoice; 3,000 or more renewals $10.00/invoice)
- If you pay by credit card, a processing fee of 3.5% will be added to the total.
- There is no check processing fee for electronic checks.
- NIPR processing fees and credit card fees are not refundable.
