North Dakota Automobile Insurance Plan

North Dakota requires that the owner of a motor vehicle carry liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and no fault insurance coverages. However, some drivers are unable to get automobile insurance through regular insurance outlets due to underwriting reasons including a poor driving record. The North Dakota Automobile Insurance Plan commonly referred to as "the assigned risk plan" was created to provide a mechanism for drivers to be able to obtain the necessary required insurance coverages. This plan was designed to make insurance available to any driver who wants to buy it ... regardless of their driving record.

You are eligible for coverage through the plan, if:
  • You are a resident of North Dakota.
  • Your vehicle is registered in North Dakota.
  • You have a current valid North Dakota drivers license.
  • You have no unpaid automobile insurance premiums in the last twelve months.

The cost of coverage through the plan is higher than the regular market. If you cannot get insurance through the regular market, ask your agent or broker for assistance in applying to the plan for coverage.
