Bismarck, ND - Based upon the National Weather Service spring flood forecast, it is likely that some areas along the Red River and some of its tributaries will experience higher than normal flooding this spring.
North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman warned, "Recent flooding disasters in the Gulf Region have pointed to the importance of flood insurance-timing is crucial-and now is the time to consider whether or not consumers need flood coverage." There is a 30-day waiting period before a flood insurance policy becomes effective.
Many people falsely assume that their existing homeowner's policy covers flooding. However, flood insurance coverage is purchased separately. Flood insurance is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program but can also be purchased from your existing insurance agent.
"Flooding can occur in North Dakota due to heavy rains, melting snow and failed levees and dams," Poolman said. In addition, every year since 1993, a disaster has been declared in North Dakota because of flooding. "It is important that North Dakota consumers across the state consider this when deciding to purchase flood insurance."
