BISMARCK, N.D.-North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm released a report today that outlines state requirements and insurance availability for 34 types of vehicles, including scooters, electric wheelchairs, ATVs, dune buggies and snowmobiles.
"This is the first study of its kind in North Dakota," Hamm said. The report details state requirements and insurance policies that are available to provide coverage for vehicles designed for personal use typically on private property. He said consumers may think these vehicles are covered by their homeowners' policies, but that isn't always the case.
"The Insurance Department has seen an increase in calls on a wide variety of vehicles," Hamm said. "Consumers are looking for information on state insurance requirements and in some cases, having trouble finding coverage for these vehicles. This report is a great resource for consumers looking for coverage information."
In the first phase of the study, the Insurance Department collaborated with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) and North Dakota Game and Fish to determine state requirements for each vehicle. The Insurance Department then surveyed insurance companies that write the major share of personal auto, homeowners' and farmowners' insurance in North Dakota. The report includes a description and photo of each vehicle, followed by responses from DOT and the insurance industry.
"The report provides a lot of useful information, but I encourage consumers to talk to their insurance agents for information specific to their policies," he said.
