Hamm reminds consumers to insure their summer fun

Posted on 7/2/2008

Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm today reminds consumers to review their insurance policies to make sure they are properly protected for summer fun.

"Fireworks over the Fourth of July holiday can be fun, but they're a liability on your property," Hamm said. "It's a good idea to check with your insurance agent to find out if you're covered for liability if someone is injured or for damage to your home from fireworks as a result of your actions."

Hamm offers additional tips on boat, motorcycle, trampoline and pool use:

• Some homeowners' policies cover a small boat for $1,500 or less in physical damage, but larger boats usually require a separate policy.

• Jet skis also usually require a separate boat insurance policy.

• Motorcycles require a separate policy that covers liability, uninsured and underinsured coverage, and possibly comprehensive and collision coverage. Some policies may require a helmet be worn.

• Pools and trampolines provide a lot of fun, but also increase your insurance risk. Check with your insurance agent to make sure you are properly insured. Be sure to ask if your policy requires any safety measures like a fence or a locked gate.

"A call to your insurance agent is always a good first step in making sure you are protecting yourself and your family," Hamm said.
